A special recording of The Sheringham Shantymen performing Home from the sea for the RNLI’s 200th anniversary year.
The Sheringham Shantymen group was originally conceived in 1988 by a group of friends and members of RNLI Sheringham Lifeboat crew. Originally they were called ‘The Augusta Singers’, named after one of Sheringham’s earliest lifeboats and in 1990 they changed their nameto The Sheringham Shantymen. Since 1990 The Sheringham Shantymen have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the RNLI (and some select other charities) with many serving and retired lifeboat crew passing through their ranks. In 2024 The Sheringham Shantymen still have close ties with the RNLI, having four members who are currently serving on the volunteer crew at Sheringham. With 2024 being the bicentenary year of the RNLI the Shantymen have many special events planned to help celebrate the RNLI’s 200 years of saving lives at sea including producing this video which includes an introduction featuring a special piece of music based on the RNLI pager tone composed and performed by RNLI crew member and former Sheringham Shantyman Jon Payne. The introduction features Cromer Lifeboat before a segway into the reading of the first verse by Sheringham RNLI helmsman Steve Banks, followed by The Sheringham Shantymen performing the rest of the song. Home from the sea was written by Phil Coulter, this film was shot & edit by Chris Taylor and thanks go to Cromer RNLI and to Sheringham Museum for allowing us to film amongst some of Sheringham’s vintage RNLI lifeboats. We hope you enjoy this video – dedicated to the courage of RNLI volunteers since 1824.
